Morning Habits That Secretly Sabotage Your Day
Ok, it’s time to get real about the power you have to impact your day.
Consider all of the things that happen around you or to you throughout the day.
Now, imagine the difference in how you respond or react to those same situations when you are in complete control of your body and mind.
It all starts the minute you wake up. So you can start planning your peaceful morning routine by avoiding these 15 things from now on!
It’s time to start using healthy morning habits and Own The Day!
1. You Snooze, You Lose
Did you know that hitting the snooze button is the worst thing you can do to start your day in a peaceful way?
Yep, little did you know that hitting that snooze button is the quickest way to completely take what could be an amazing day and start it off in chaos.
If you are a snoozer it’s time to try something new.
When your alarm goes off, open your eyes and get up. Don’t just lay in bed awake. Get up as soon as you hear your alarm.
If you struggle with getting up with the alarm try counting backwards from 5, then just do it.
The first task of the day is to wake up. Be sure to start your day strong by succeeding at your first to-do for the day!
2. Don’t Read Emails
You probably have a ton to get done during the day. It makes sense to fit in as much as possible as soon as you wake up, right?
Actually, the truth is, no.
One of the best things you can do for your productivity and to have a more peaceful day is to avoid your traditional “to-do list” items until your morning routine is totally finished.
Consider this, you want to have a more peaceful day so it makes sense to be intentional about what you choose to do as your day is starting.
Wait to do the obligatory stuff until your scheduled time to do it.
3. Don’t Watch TV or Videos
It may be tempting to just sit and finish a show or movie you didn’t get to finish last night. Or maybe you watch the news in the morning.
Definitely eliminate watching any tv or videos in the morning.
When you watch television and something happens that has stressful situations, crime, sad things, you name it… your cortisol levels go crazy.
The difference in your mood and attitude when you are able to keep your cortisol levels in check is huge.
Save the tv or videos for another time to have a peaceful morning routine.
4. Do Not Skip Breakfast
Avoid the trap of skipping breakfast.
Your body needs the fuel and nourishment to get a strong start. You wouldn’t even think of driving your car without having enough gas to get from point A to point B.
Why should your body be any different?
Be sure to take a few minutes to have breakfast before you start your day!
Eating a healthy breakfast is a morning habit that will start your day on the right foot and is a great part of your productive morning routine.
5. Drink Coffee First
This is for all of my fellow coffee lovers and tea lovers out there. I am with you. Coffee is my go-to in the morning.
I love it so much I enjoy an amazing latte (or two) every morning…
BUT, did you know that you shouldn’t have caffeine first thing? Mhm… that’s right.
Start your day with a few glasses of water. Your body needs the water first thing in the morning prior to getting your caffeine fix.
One great way to start the day right is to have a bottle of water waiting for you in your bathroom after you brush your teeth!

6. Sit In Darkness
As tempting as it is to enjoy your quiet moments of morning solitude in darkness it’s really not the best way to start your day.
Instead, sit in front of the window or turn on the lights as you go through your cozy morning routine.
To kickstart your circadian rhythm, turn on the lights, sit in front of some natural light and kick-start your day.
Your body will know it’s time to focus and in turn, your day will start off much more honed in on intentional success!
7. Don’t Avoid Fresh Air
Even if you aren’t a person that enjoys a walk or exercise first thing in the morning, find a way to get some fresh air when you wake up.
Stand at the door and take a deep, cleansing breath of fresh air before you sit down with your coffee or tea.
It sounds kind of silly if you haven’t tried it, but breathing in fresh air will wake up all of your senses.
Let’s be honest, who doesn’t need the opportunity to intentionally look out and breathe in all that the day has to offer.
Breathing in some fresh air will start your healthy morning routine strong and you will be better prepared for the day!
8. Skip Morning Skin Care Routine
Men and women alike benefit from taking a few minutes when you wake up to cleanse your face.
You don’t need a fancy or expensive skin care treatment. All you need is some cool water, a good cleanser and some moisturizer.
Washing your face first thing in the morning literally wakes up your skin and your body. As you go through this process, be methodical about it.
Feel the water on your face. Massage the cleanser into your skin. Rinse it off and feel the water energizing your body.
Moisturizers are important to keep your skin hydrated and avoid pulling out the nourishment it needs.
Washing your face in the morning not only wakes you up it’s a healthy morning habit to make a part of your morning routine.
9. Be Tempted By Social Media
Going for your phone is almost second nature at any time during the day, but it’s not a healthy morning habit. Not even a little bit…
Avoiding going to social media first thing in the morning gives you the ability to avoid seeing, reading or hearing things that will throw off your day.
We all have feed that inches its way into our day that is negative and sometimes really irritating.
Start your day strong by being intentional about avoiding social media during your morning routine.
Your body and mind will thank you.
10. Don’t Skip Stretching
It’s pretty crazy to think you can wake your body up and make it happy by doing some simple stretches every morning!
It’s true though. You can stretch your body and feel the energy move from your feet all the way to your fingertips.
If you struggle to wake up in the morning and have a tendency to be a slow mover in the mornings, this makes all the difference!
Using stretches to start your day is one of the healthy morning habits that is commonly forgotten. It only takes a few minutes. Try it! You won’t be sorry.

11. Avoiding Morning Prayer/Meditation
One of the best things you can do to start your day off with intention and focus is to meditate or pray to start your day.
Engaging your mind first thing in the morning from a peaceful and calm approach will start your day with an attitude of gratitude.
If you struggle to avoid the temptation of “other things” on your phone in the morning don’t use it for your morning routine. Purchase a book that has morning prayers or meditations that you go to for your morning meditation.
You will find that starting your day with morning prayers or morning meditations will not only wake up your mind in a positive way, but your day will have started on your own terms.
Your focus is on the things you want to focus on, not on the things that inadvertently end up in front of you.
12. Wake Up, Eat, And Go
It’s important to allow your body, mind and spirit to all wake up completely and truly be ready for the day.
Rushing through your morning with no healthy morning routine and heading out the door with a sugar laden breakfast will send your body into an unhealthy pattern for the day.
Instead, be sure to give your body a balanced, nourishing breakfast that will avoid a sugar rush that increases your blood sugar levels and find you crashing in the next hour.
13. Don’t Skip Making Your Bed
Take a few minutes after you wake up to make your bed.
If you think about it, you’re telling your body (that just wants to dive back in and sleep some more) that it’s time to get up and start the day!
If you have decorative pillows and blankets, even better. Your eyes and your mind will see this first completed task and be more prepared to take on the day!
14. Leave A Mess In Your Wake
As you get ready for the day take a few seconds to put things where they go.
Be sure your dirty clothes make it to the hamper, your morning self care items are put away and your bathroom and kitchen are picked up as you go.
Not only are you sending signals to your mind that your day is starting off organized and neat, you are setting your day up for success by not adding work for yourself when you get home.
This is especially important if you either work from home or stay at home during the day.
There’s enough to get done everyday. Don’t sabotage yourself by making more work!
This is a simple, healthy morning habit that will make a HUGE difference in your healthy morning routine.
15. Fool Yourself Into Thinking You DON’T Need Healthy Morning Habits
Start your day with intention if you want to have a peaceful day.
To have a more productive and peaceful day you want to be sure to start your day with an intentional morning routine that will set you up for success.
The first 30 – 60 minutes in the morning and what you choose to do for that time will make all the difference in how your entire day goes.
