4 SIMPLE GOAL SETTING TIPS FOR YOUR HOME BASED BUSINESS
If you work from home (WFH) as a solopreneur, this may look very different than working in a corporate position or managing employees in your home based business.
Regardless, it’s important to understand how much time you want to commit to your work. Here are some ideas for your WFH Career Goals.
Get More Organized
Regardless of whether you are an incredibly organized person, or one of those people that has to dig through a pile to find that one paper you need, there is always room to add more organization to your life.
Staying organized allows you to compartmentalize the things in your space.
Store your work supplies, paperwork and products logically with similar items together.
Here are two of my favorite organization tools for my home based business!
Digital Organization For Your Home Based Business
If you are a blogger or digital shop owner and do any type of creative work I’m sure you’ve heard of Canva Pro.
It is an absolutely amazing resource and my GO-TO for all things creative!
What no one every really talks about though is their folder storage system within the program. I LOVE that I can keep all of my creative work in my organized Canva folders and have quick access to them no matter where I am.
The best part is, I can copy and adjust a current design, template or business card for a client or myself in minutes!
I have and use Adobe from time to time but Canva is my go-to! If you have a home based business be sure to check it out!
To think I put off using this program is insane to me now. It’s a HUGE timesaver.
Whether you are creating tools to make your life simpler and more organized as a small business owner or creating products and designs to sell you will love Canva!

Commit To Using A Planner
If you aren’t already using a planner, try using a planner to organize your time. Stick to those things that you know you’re going to be doing every day or every week. Then add in additional tasks.
Planners are perfect for keeping you on track and finding balance.
It is easy to get distracted and pulled away from whatever you are working on to do something else.
Contrary to popular belief, multi-tasking is not useful or productive. Avoid the pitfall of being distracted by using a planner to intentionally plan your day, week, month and ultimately … year.

Set Specific Goals For Your Home Based Business Stats
If you aren’t a numbers person you might shy away from the statistics side of your work.
Statistics and analytics are a necessary part of your work in any home based business.
Don’t let the numbers overwhelm you. Remember, the numbers your looking at and analyzing are directly related to what you love, what you do everyday and directly linked to your bottom line.
This is your dream, so don’t let your statistics and analytics intimidate you. You’ve got this!
No matter what you do for work, numbers don’t lie. If you really want to see a significant change in your bottom line do some number crunching.
Here are some options for you to look at when setting goals for your work or business.
Increase Impressions or Impact
- Be specific about what you want that number to look like
- Don’t be afraid to be aggressive
- If you are a blogger and had an average of 62,000 impressions each month last year, set your goal to be 100,000
- Be specific
Improve Your Conversion
- Look at the percentage of times that potential customers (through impressions or views) engaged or purchased your product
- Be specific and don’t be afraid to be a bit aggressive
Increase Communication
- The best way to understand what your customers, clients or tribe need or want is to communicate with them.
- You can quickly adapt and adjust when you communicate often with your customers
These are just three areas to start to focus on your statistics for your home based business or WFH business. Remember, you can do this with any business. Impressions and impact happen with any potential client.
How often do you convert that potential client into someone you work with or sell to?
Finally, how often do you communicate with those same people?
There is no perfect answer to what works best. That depends on your specific work and niche.
TIP: Once you decide on a strategy to improve your statistics for your home based business, stick to it for at least 4 months. Watch the numbers over time and adjust accordingly once 4 months has passed. Change doesn’t happen overnight.
To set goals that will give you more satisfaction at work, focus on consistently increasing those statistics.
Work Life Balance
As you go into the new year, commit to having better work life balance.
It is easy to allow one aspect of your life to take control if you aren’t intentional about how you spend your time.
Finding the balance between work and home life is very important and can be a lifesaver in allowing you to see your full potential.
Don’t fall into the trap of committing all of your time or 99% of your time to your work and deprive your family and friends of the love and care that they need and you want to give.
Overcommitting your time to work will only breed resentment and create a situation where your career is in constant battle with your home life.
Master Your Business Finances
Let’s be honest about this. Business finances can be a nightmare at the end of the year when tax time rolls around.
Don’t let this be a time of frustration. Having a system for managing your finances throughout the year will make your life so much easier.
Not only that, you get the benefit of knowing exactly where you stand at any given moment.
Don’t allow poor financial management to tank the full potential of your business.
Here are some tips for managing your finances this year!
Include Recurring Bills
- Membership fees
- Web Hosting
- Paid Plugins for your website
- Electric
- Internet
- Licenses
- Supplies
- Mileage
- Gas
- Continuing Education
Categorize Expenses and Income
- Be sure to include appropriate categorization as you go
- Waiting will lead to you forgetting at tax time and potentially getting yourself in some less than pleasant tax situations
These are just a handful of options. Anything you spend on your business should be documented as you spend it.
After having worked in business and run my own business for many years I know the importance of good bookkeeping. Business finance is nothing to be scared of but it can be intimidating.
TIP: Business finances don’t have to overwhelm. Log and journal your spending and income as you go to avoid frustration and missed opportunities in your business.
Waiting until the end of the year doesn’t exactly start your year off on the right foot.
Make the commitment to know your financial standing for your home based business throughout the year with confidence by mastering your business finances.
Setting Goals For Your WFH Or Home Based Business
Running your own business is one of those things that can be filled with joy, excitement and a sense of accomplishment that you have a skill that others need and want.
